The Materials Research Society has chosen Aaswath Raman, an assistant professor of materials science and engineering at the UCLA Samueli School of Engineering, as the recipient of its 2022 Kavli Foundation Early Career Lectureship in Materials Science award. The honor recognizes significant contributions to the study of materials science by a researcher in the early stages of their career.
Raman’s research focuses on controlling light and heat at the nanoscale. Working from a multidisciplinary computational and experimental perspective, his laboratory designs, creates and studies how light and heat interact with metamaterials and nanoscale optical structures and devices. He aims to enable new technologies and apply them to renewable energy, information processing, sensing, displays and communication systems.
A co-founder of the startup SkyCool Systems that utilizes a natural radiative cooling process to help cool down buildings, Raman joined UCLA Samueli in 2018. He is a member of the California NanoSystems Institute at UCLA and has received several early career honors, including a Young Faculty Award from the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency, a Hellman Fellowship, a Sloan Research Fellowship and the Materials Research Society Robinson Award for Science and Technology in Renewable Energy.
Founded in 1973, the Materials Research Society seeks to advance materials and improve quality of life. Based in Warrendale, Pennsylvania, the international organization boasts more than 13,000 members across a broad range of fields, including chemistry, physics, biology and engineering.
