Current Graduate Students:

Edward Chang

PhD student

 Sara Kiani

PhD student

Sara graduated from Sharif University of Technology, Iran in materials science and engineering. She received her MS degree from the University of Texas at Arlington where she focused on measuring thermal properties of graphite-epoxy braided composites.  She joined Kennametal Inc. in 2005 as a research engineer and stayed for 3.5 years before staring her PhD at UCLA in 2009. At Kennametal her major area of research was on hard materials and hard coatings including carbides and ceramics for oil and gas drilling applications. The area of research at UCLA is in-situ TEM nanomechanical testing.

Jonathan Quan

PhD student

David Rivera

PhD student

Natalie Wali

PhD student

Natalie graduate from California Institute of Technology in the field of Engineering and applied sciences.  Shen joined UCLA for both her Masters and PhD in the materials science and engineering department. Her expected graduation is June 2011. Her research title is refractory-based ceramic matrix composite for ultrahigh temperature applications.

Wenbo (Kevin) Xin

PhD student

Wenbo (Kevin) got his Bachelor’s degree in materials science and engineering from Shandong University in China in 2008. He then continued for Master’s degree in materials science and engineering at Washington State University in 2008-2010. He joined UCLA for PhD in 2010. His area of resaerch will be mainly on carbon-based nano-scale polymer matrix composites.

Po-Ching Yen

PhD student

Po-Ching got his bachelor degree and master degree in Mechanical Engineering at National Central University, Taiwan. After he received his masters degree, he did his military service as a second lieutenant and platoon leader. Po-Ching began his Ph.D. study in Materials Science at UCLA since 2006. His research interests are mainly focused on mechanical behavior of hybrid fiber metal laminates for aerospace application.
